In the fifth presentation of the Transformative Coaching series, Animas Founder Nick Bolton sets out to examine what we mean by the psychological dimension of the Animas approach and how we work with it in a meaningful yet non-directive manner.

At the start of the presentation, Nick invites attendees to view or revisit the first four presentations of the series – likening each presentation to pieces of the jigsaw that shows how we think about Transformative Coaching.

In tackling the theme, “Psychological Dimensions to Transformative Coaching”, he first defines what we mean by “psychological” and explores why transformative coaching is fundamentally an inside job that emerges from psychological awareness meeting real world behavioural change and the resultant paradigm shift.

He then talks about the chronology of change by revisiting Mezirow’s 10 Stages of Transformative Learning and then discussing each level of the 3 Levels of Coaching: Performance Coaching, Developmental Coaching and Transformative Coaching.

He also talks about Psychological Foundations behind the psychological dimension where he touches on Personal Construct Theory, Transformative Theory, and Psychology of Worldview.

With traditional forms of coaching focused on behavioural change, transformative coaching intentionally seeks to create this paradigm shift through reflexive learning, exploration and experimentation and Nick shares how the Animas approach seeks to achieve this through the Unifying Transformative Theory.

He then shares a model of transformative inquiry – a client-centred model that he says is more of a reflection of his intuitive process rather than a proven model.

Finally, Nick talks about ethics where he offers several considerations for coaches who seek to do Transformative work.
